What is National Science Day and Why is it Celebrated?

National Science Day is marked in India on February 28th each year in remembrance of Sir C.V. Raman's discovery of the Raman Effect on February 28, 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this revolutionary find, becoming the first Indian scientist to receive a Nobel Prize.

What is Raman effect ?

The Raman Effect is the phenomenon where light alters its wavelength upon traveling through a transparent medium. It has led to the development of spectroscopy, which has applications in chemistry, medicine, and space exploration.

The Raman Spectrograph is a scientific instrument used to analyze materials by measuring the Raman Effect, where light scatters and changes wavelength after interacting with a substance.

How Does It Work?

🔹 When light travels through a substance, most of it continues unchanged.
🔹 A small portion of the light scatters in different directions.
🔹 Some of this scattered light loses or gains energy due to its interaction with the molecules of the substance.
🔹 As a result, the color (wavelength) of the scattered light changes slightly—this is the Raman Effect.

Example to Understand It Better

Imagine you throw a tennis ball at a moving swing. If the swing is still, the ball bounces back with the same speed. But if the swing is moving, the ball bounces back faster or slower, depending on the swing’s movement.

Similarly, when light hits molecules, their motion changes the light’s energy, leading to the Raman Effect.
